The San Mateo Resource Conservation District (RCD) welcomes contractors to bid on the Little Butano Creek Fish Passage and Habitat Enhancement Project to remediate a fish passage barrier and improve stream and wetland habitat on Little Butano Creek. The project is located in Pescadero, California.
This project will address the current limit of anadromy on Little Butano Creek: a 15-foot-tall bedrock chute located approximately 1,000 feet upstream from the confluence of Butano and Little Butano Creeks. The bedrock chute is a total barrier to fish migration and is believed to have formed due to historic realignment and straightening of the creek, which led to subsequent rampant incision. This project will adjust the creek grade below the bedrock chute barrier to restore fish passage and improve 3.1 acres of habitat through installation of large wood structures, creation of pools, backwatering of existing disconnected floodplains, and habitat enhancements at two confluence zones. These actions will expand aquatic habitat, provide shelter and refugia for fish within the reach and passage to upstream habitat, reduce erosion and incision, and allow for greater retention of sediment.
The purpose of this request for bids is to select a contractor for the project to conduct the following implementation activities:
- Restore fish passage by modifying the grade below the bedrock chute and realigning the channel upstream of the bedrock chute to increase length and reduce slope to allow fish migration above the barrier.
- Enhance habitat complexity by installing 21 woody debris structures to increase shelter, store sediment, and provide aquatic cover.
- Create eight low-flow pools to provide resting areas and drought refuge for fish.
- Reconnect floodplains by backwatering two existing, but perched, floodplain terraces.
- Restore a historic meander and confluence zone that will create high quality, low gradient habitat where an unnamed tributary drains into Little Butano
- Submit the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) application materials and reporting, and SWPPP compliance.
A mandatory pre-bid tour will be held at the project site. Attendance is required for all bidders. RSVPs for the pre-bid tour are required.
